Self Worth - What is it and how do I maintain it?

Self-worth refers to the value, significance, and sense of worthiness that individuals attribute to themselves. It is the perception and evaluation of one's own inherent value, regardless of external factors such as achievements, material possessions, or social status. Self-worth encompasses a deep-seated belief in one's own worth as a person, deserving of respect, love, and happiness. I remember the time when I did not embrace the value of my self-worth and this affected the way I experienced everything in my life. I felt like I was in a never ending fight. This encourages me today to share with you some tips to build and sustain your self-worth.

Self-worth is closely related to self-esteem and self-confidence, but it even goes beyond this. While self-esteem refers to the overall evaluation of oneself, self-worth focuses more specifically on an individual's fundamental sense of personal value and deservingness. It is not contingent upon external validation or the approval of others. Building self-worth is a valuable and ongoing journey that can significantly improve your overall well-being and how you view yourself.

Here are three (3) tips to help you build and strengthen your self-worth:

😊 Practice Self-Compassion:

Self-compassion involves treating yourself with the same kindness and understanding that you would offer to a friend. It means acknowledging your flaws and imperfections without harsh self-criticism. To practice self-compassion: Challenge your inner critic: When negative self-talk arises, consciously challenge and reframe those thoughts. Treat yourself with kindness: Be gentle with yourself in times of failure or difficulty. Understand that nobody is perfect: Recognise that everyone makes mistakes, and your self-worth isn't diminished by them.

😊 Set Healthy Boundaries:

Setting and maintaining healthy boundaries is crucial for preserving your self-worth. Boundaries help protect your time, energy, and emotions, and they prevent others from taking advantage of you. To set healthy boundaries: Identify your limits: Understand what you're comfortable with and what you're not. Communicate your boundaries: Clearly and assertively express your limits to others. Be consistent: Stick to your boundaries, and don't feel guilty for prioritising your well-being.

😊 Self-Care and Self-Improvement:

Engaging in self-care and personal growth activities can boost your self-worth. Taking care of your physical, emotional, and mental health is a powerful way to reinforce your belief in your own worth. Consider the following: Practice self-care routines: Regularly engage in activities that nourish your body and mind, such as exercise, meditation, or hobbies you enjoy. Set and achieve small goals: Accomplishing even small tasks can boost your self-esteem and reinforce your sense of competence. Learn and grow: Invest in personal development, whether it's through education, acquiring new skills, or seeking support through coaching, work through personal issues. Developing a healthy sense of self-worth is a journey that requires patience, self-compassion, and a commitment to your well-being.

Over time, these practices can help you strengthen your self-worth and lead to a more fulfilling and positive self-image. Today more than ever I encourage you to make time for yourself and your daily practises for they maintain your ability to create the life you so desire. Life is a gift and it is our responsibility to create the experience we have of the journey.
